Carbon neutral Laattapiste by 2025
Laattapiste has commited to reduce the green house gas emissions caused by its actions. The company is along in the EcoCompass environmental management system (https://ekokompassi.fi/en/ecocompass/) . The goal is to reduce the carbon footprint and to become a carbon neutral enterprise by the year of 2025. Laattapiste works closely with Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre to calculate the carbon footprint and to follow the steps towards neutrality.
Some of the actions taken are lowering the consumption of electricity, water and heating and choosing environmental options in purchasing materials. Recycling is key action – today already 97,13 % of the waste can be utilized. In the offices the electricity is 100 % from renewal sources. The solar panel systems on the HQ roof is producing most of the electricity needed at Vantaa office.
Logistics has the biggest emissions of the company´s actions – that is why in logistics there have been made big changes to choose efficient and low carbon options. Today Laattapiste offers 100 % carbon neutral transportation services inside Finland. The carbon footprint of these transportations have been compensated by the logistics companies.
Laattapiste is also a member of the Finnish Green Building Council. The common goal for the building industry is to achieve carbon neutral build environment in Finland by 2035.
Surface materials for low carbon construction – already 86 carbon neutral product collections
Sustainability shows in the product portfolio, including for example carbon neutral and even carbon negative materials. The aim is to push the manufacturers towards environmentally friendly production and to get Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) to the products.
At the moment there are 16 carbon neutral ceramic tile collections available – suitable products for both home bathrooms and also high traffic areas in public areas. The tile manufacturers work to lower the carbon footprint of their production. The ceramic tiles have very long lifecycle and it makes them more sustainable selection. A new addition to carbon neutral products is installing solution for ceramic tiles; adhesive and tile joint by Kerakoll, which is focused on sustainable production. Laattapiste has compensated the carbon footprint of these tiles and tiling products (cradle-to-gate EPD A1-A3) in Finland.
One very good example of sustainable manufacturers is Interface, which is third party verified sertified carbon neutral company. Also all the products the manufacture are carbon neutral throughout the full life cycle, according to Carbon Neutral Floors -programme. Interface has focused in lowering the carbon footprint of the raw materials and production. For example the producing of carpet tile has 76 % smaller carbon footprint (Interface EcoMetrics™ 2021 vs. 1996). Today the carbon footprint (EPD A1-A3, cradle-to-gate) of Interface carpet tiles is one of the smallest in the industry.
They have managed to lower the carbon footprint e.g. with using renewable energy and utilizing recycled and biobased raw materials in production. Today the average of carpet tiles include 92,8 % recycled and biobased materials total. Some examples of the recycled materials used are recycled polyamid / nylon from fishing nets, recycled limestone and PVB from car windscreens. The biocomposite backing is standard in all carpet tile since 2021.
All the carpet tiles installed glue-free can be 100 % recycled with ReEntry/ReUse programmes.
The latest achievement of Interface is a carpet tile with negative carbon footprint. Manufacturing a product stores more carbon than it emits, then the product is carbon negative. The carbon negative materials in the backing, in combination with specialty yarns and tufting processes, results in a carbon negative carpet tile (cradle-to-gate EPD A1-A3). Interface has a goal to be carbon negative company by 2040, and this innovative carpet tile, unique at the market, is one concrete action achieved with material science, to show it is possible.

The carbon neutral Interface carpet tiles can be installed glue-free with TacTiles-stickers. These carpet tiles are especially suitable for buildings of environmental certificate, like LEED-, BREEAM- and WELL-projects.
