Next to Pasila, Ilmala is known for its television towers and attracts business travelers thanks to its good transport connections. From the center the train takes you to Ilmala in just 8 minutes, from the airport in 25 minutes. In the fall of 2022 tram connections were improved in the direction of Ilmala. Now tram 2 (9) passes by Ilmala station enabling a new interchange between local trains and the tram line.
Ilmala’s good transportation connections also apply to tenants and users of Ilmala Aura. Aura which is currently being built will rise near the Ilmala train stop and next to the tram stop, and it is not a long distance from the nearest bus stops either. There is also a bike station for city bikes nearby. Ilmala can be easily reached by car along the main roads.
The most delicious moments of office days are lunch breaks. There is no need to feel hungry in Ilmala, because there are several places to eat on the ground floors of the office buildings. Rich lunch buffets fill the stomach easily. For example, at Ilmalan Asema office building has a restaurant Båx at the ground floor where the slouchy buffet tables also serve delicious freshly baked pizza at lunchtime. The landmarks of Ilmala, which functions as a center for media and business activities, are HSY’s Vesilinnat and Pasila’s link tower. The area is also known as the location of YLE. Also a new media center is planned for the area. The area of Yleisradio has already been developed a lot and in the next few years the area will develop even more. The area is functionally mixed with housing, trade, public services and offices. The connections through the area will be improved and a park is planned in the middle of the area. Office construction is planned on both sides of Hakamäentie in the immediate vicinity of Ilmala station. The new traffic connection from Central Pasila to North Pasila is planned to pass through this office area. The heart of Ilmala is planned to be Ilmalantori which will be located right next to Aura.
Although a lot of new buildings are currently being built in Ilmala, the area has already been built since the beginning of the 20th century. Ilmala in which it got its name according to the meteorological observation station was built on the site of water towers at the beginning of the 20th century. Yleisradio’s operations began in the 1920s and the oldest building in the Ilmala area is the Old Broadcasting Center from 1927. The most significant building in the area is Yleisradio’s main building Iso Paja and Helsinki’s tallest structure, the TV tower.
